Solon Bus Drivers Participate in S.T.A.R.T. Training
Solon City Schools bus drivers participated in hands-on safety training on August 6, led by police officers from the School Transportation Active-Threat Response Training program, known as S.T.A.R.T.
The training used role play and simulations to teach drivers strategies for keeping students safe in the event of an emergency or threat. They practiced verbal de-escalation techniques, defensive tactics, and emergency driving maneuvers. The training aimed to provide drivers with practical response strategies and improve their decision-making in crisis situations.
“We’re working through different types of situations and learning practical strategies to handle potential threats,” said bus driver Linda Fischer. “It’s helping us feel more prepared.”
Driver David Pitrone said the hands-on format made a significant difference. “It’s great to work in a district that prioritizes high-quality professional development for its drivers,” he said.
Transportation Supervisor Lisa Shirkey said experiential learning is a key part of the district’s crisis preparedness efforts.
“I don’t want my drivers to just hear about safety procedures. I want them to actually practice them and learn by doing,” Shirkey said. “This training builds both their skills and confidence.”
Solon Police Officer and S.T.A.R.T. senior instructor Nick Kline praised the drivers’ focus and resilience during the training. “They did a fantastic job,” he said. “This kind of training can be intense, but every driver walked away with tools they can use within their limits.”
Kline added that the program should be reassuring to families. “Parents should feel proud that Solon is offering this level of training,” he said. “It shows a real commitment to student safety.”
